The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources recently held a summit on the R3 concept of Recruitment, Retention and Reactivation within the outdoor industry. It was nothing less than a wake-up call to an aging population of outdoor enthusiasts to become more diverse and inclusive.
It's no surprise that the median age of hunters and anglers is climbing, and in his keynote Matt Dunfee of the Wildlife Management Institute pulls no punches in his analysis of the numbers we're facing. While sales in the industry have been booming, the numbers of hunting licenses sold has been falling.
But Matt also offers real-world solutions to broadening our base, and shows how the R3 process provides a pathway to growth in the outdoors space for the future. We need to make the process less intimidating for newcomers, and continue to mentor them as they progress into the future.
Every outdoorsman who cares about the future of the sport needs to pause for 15 minutes and listen to this message.
