Fall weather is making an appearance across the Lone Star State and for some that represents a long tradition of breaking out a top shelf whisky to consummate the fall season. If you enjoy high quality whisky, there is only one whisky you should be pulling down from the shelf this fall, Balcones. What’s even better is that the world awarded Balcones whiskies are distilled right here in Texas.
Balcones Distilling, made a splash around the world as Whiskies of the World announced results for its first ever whisky competition this week, revealing a new set of awards for the Balcones Distillery. Brimstone, a powerful but elegantly smoked blue corn whisky, was named Best in Class for the Innovative Whisky category and received a Gold Medal.
Balcones Brimstone is a one-of-a-kind Texas whisky. Blue corn is made into spirit and then smoked using a special process before aging in premium oak barrels. The result is a bold and smoky whisky that fills the air with aromas of barbecue and campfire. The winning batch of Brimstone was 14-6, blended on August 25th, 2014. Brimstone 14-6 is currently in limited distribution around major markets.
Balcones' flagship whisky, Texas Single Malt, was also named Best in Class for USA Malt whiskies and awarded a Silver Medal. The distillery's newest expression, a single malt aged in French oak barrels and named FR.OAK, was given a Silver Medal as well.
Texas Single Malt, named Best in Class for USA Malts and awarded a Silver Medal by Whiskies of the World, is the distillery's most awarded product having previously won over two dozen accolades since its release in 2011. Balcones blends, bottles and ships Texas Single Malt to its major markets on a monthly basis.
FR.OAK is the first permanent line extension of Texas Single Malt, which utilizes French oak casks to create an entirely new expression of Texas whisky. FR.OAK previously won Gold at the New York World Wine & Spirits Competition this year. The distillery plans on releasing FR.OAK later this year.
Jared Himstedt, Balcones' Distillery Manager, said about the wins, "It is an honor to achieve such distinguished recognition by a very talented panel of Texas judges, the same people who are working with our products on a day-to-day basis. Brimstone is an exciting and fun whisky to work with, one that we believe captures the taste of Texas incredibly well. We're looking forward to bringing more of these outstanding batches to market as soon as we can."
News of the wins at Whiskies of the World come just as Balcones has closed on a $15 million deal to fund the construction and provide operating capital for an expanded distillery. Construction of the new facility will begin after the first of the year and is scheduled to be completed by October 2015.
