One backup gone but WSU's OL corps sizeable

A RESERVE OFFENSIVE LINEMAN won't return to the Cougs this season. Despite his absence, Washington State will still welcome right around 20 offensive linemen when fall camp kicks off on Aug. 7.

THERE HAVE BEEN indications this offseason the Wazzu o-line under new coach Steve Morton will perform significantly better than the unit did in '09. Still, questions persist, further work remains and fall camp position battles have yet to be fully waged. IMPACT: Sizing up 13 WSU redshirt freshmen

PULLMAN -- Paul Wulff and his coaching staff bemoaned the lack of speed they found when arriving at Washington State 2 ½ years ago, so they've put an emphasis on recruiting faster, more athletic players. The results have yet to show in the won-loss column but regular observers at practices noticed a marked improvement in speed last season (in redshirting players), and more of the same this spring.

OL, Morton look to beat double A gap blitz

THE TOP JOB THIS SPRING on offense is clear, to get the o-line squared away. Cougar fans received good news this offseason when Steve Morton was named the assistant coach in charge of the unit -- he brings with him a wealth of o-line coaching experience. In particular, he's adept at countering the one thing that hurt WSU most last season.

Charting the Cougar weight, muscle gains

THE UPDATED WEIGHTS for the Cougar footballers are in. The numbers, as they were in the spring, remain striking. There are many who have gained 15-20 pounds, and more, since last year. Then there are players who put on the bulk before the spring, then trimmed and repackaged it this summer to add quickness. CF.C charts the progression from fall of '08, to the '09 spring, to today.
