Arizona rallied to outscore Virginia 41-33 in the second half but it was too little too late as the Wildcats fell to the upset-minded Cavaliers at home 75-72. Months from now, Arizona will realize that this loss wasn't that bad but for now they must deal with the reality that although they've improved on defense, there's still a lot of work to be done on that end of the floor to win close games.

Arizona's Tuesday night season opener in the McKale Center did not go entirely as planned, but the Wildcats did play well enough to outlast the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks 76-69. Arizona was without Lute Olson for only the eighth time in his 25 years as Wildcats coach. With the win, they improved to 5-3 in games when Olson was not on the bench.

The Cats won 68-50 in a game that saw them play very well in the first half and come back down to earth in the second.
