The Vero Beach Devil Rays have struggled in the second half, currently sitting with a 12-23 record and in the cellar of the Florida State League East division. The Devil Rays' inability to score runs has been the major weakness and reason for the poor record.

Emeel Salem, selected by the Tampa Bay Rays in the sixth round of the 2007 draft, was off to a strong start with the Columbus Catfish before sustaining a season-ending injury. Salem is now rehabbing his injured elbow at the Naimoli Complex in St. Petersburg, and is already thinking about spring training in 2009, writes Kathy Gierer.

Reid Brignac has made tremendous strides defensively this season, quieting several critics who thought that Brignac might need to switch positions before reaching the major leagues. In 2006, he put up excellent offensive statistics – .321, 24 home runs, 99 RBIs – in a breakout season. This year, he's only batting .255, but the Louisiana native is leading the Biscuits in homers and doubles (28).

Right-handed pitching prospect Heath Rollins is off to an outstanding start to the 2007 season with the Columbus Catfish of the South Atlantic League. Rollins, who was drafted out of Winthrop University in the 11th round of the 2006 draft, is still unbeaten, 6-0, with a minuscule 1.09 ERA.
