Top prospect Javier Baez has been sent back to minor league camp and will not make the opening day roster but with Blake Parker getting optioned to AAA Iowa, the Cubs opening day pitching staff just became clearer.

Schlitter Returns; Carpenter Gets DFA

In August of 2008 the Phillies sent pitching prospect Brian Schlitter to the Cubs to add reliever Scott Eyre. Looking back, the deal worked well; Eyre became a steady part of the bullpen and helped the Phillies into the post-season and eventually to a World Series championship. He returned in 2009 and gave the Phillies another strong campaign out of their bullpen in his last major league season.

For the second straight start, Jay Jackson suffered a first-inning beating at Iowa. Josh Vitters committed his ninth error and was 0-for-4 at Tennessee. Rebel Ridling had a 12-game hitting streak snapped at Daytona. Jeff Vigurs made the most of his first career start at Boise. Casey Lambert made his first appearance since undergoing Tommy John surgery, getting a start in the Arizona League.

Mitch Atkins had a brutal outing Monday at Iowa. John Gaub's day wasn't much better in relief. Blake Parker in middle relief and the I-Cubs' offense were bright spots. Austin Kirk made his 2010 debut at Boise. Jose Guevara had a solid day at the plate but a rough outing behind it.
