WSU greatly in need of returns from injury

WSU'S LACK OF depth was national news a year ago. After injuries decimated the QB position, the Cougars held an open tryout for a scout-team quarterback. Media outlets displayed highlights that featured former Woodinville High signal caller Peter Roberts winning the position. Without the same fanfare, it's a similar situation in '09 as WSU prepares for the Apple Cup.

CAMP DAY 5: Young Cougs don full pads but..

PULLMAN — Thursday morning saw the first WSU practice in full pads, but coaches nixed all-out tackling in the youth-oriented session to save wear and tear on players. Still, CB Anthony Houston — converted from receiver — drew plenty of whoops and hollers when he lowered his 6-foot-3 frame and put a solid lick on 5-8 running back Carl Winston coming out of the backfield after catching a swing pass.

Charting the Cougar weight, muscle gains

THE UPDATED WEIGHTS for the Cougar footballers are in. The numbers, as they were in the spring, remain striking. There are many who have gained 15-20 pounds, and more, since last year. Then there are players who put on the bulk before the spring, then trimmed and repackaged it this summer to add quickness. CF.C charts the progression from fall of '08, to the '09 spring, to today.

Kevin Kooyman's Diary: Week Three

He immediately made his presence known in winter conditioning after the season ended - if you weren't mentally prepared each workout you found yourself in serious trouble. I have answers to your questions, plus I have something from this morning's workout I'd like to share with Cougar Nation.

SPRING PREVIEW: Safety is wide open says Ball

YOU MIGHT THINK Xavier Hicks, the Cougs' second leading tackler last season, 13 career starts under his belt plus the fact he was clearly one of Wazzu's best players on defense in 2008, you might think a guy like that would have the starting free safety job heading into spring drills. Not the case, says safeties coach and co-defensive coordinator Chris Ball. Nobody, says Ball, has an inside track.

SCRIMMAGE: Defense rules, offense stalls

PULLMAN--Paul Wulff planned to name Washington State's new kicker after the final full scrimmage of fall camp on Friday. So much for best laid plans. Meanwhile, the defense stuffed the offensive ground attack and picked off three Gary Rogers passes. Rogers rebounded late in the session, completing all six of his passes on the final drive, with Brandon Gibson on the receiving end of the TD pass.

Cougs getting tougher; wideouts have big day

PULLMAN -- Two-a-days, a preseason staple for college football teams for decades, have all but disappeared in recent years due to the increased emphasis on unofficial summer workouts that keep most BCS players on campus virtually year-round. Paul Wulff endured plenty of two-a-days when he played at Washington State in the 1980s, and he maintains that it made players tougher than today's players.
