The Yakima Bears began their 2010 season last night with a 7-0 shutout of the Boise Hawks, perhaps signaling a reversal of their recent fortunes. The Arizona Diamondbacks' Short Season affiliate has played 40 games below .500 combined over the past two seasons. Can this year's roster bring winning baseball back to southern Washington?

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- Washington State's quest for Omaha begins here tomorrow, and both optimists and pessimists can offer good arguments on how far the Cougars will go. On the glass half-full side of the equation, there are five legitimate, sure-fire reasons why Washington State will win the Fayetteville Regional.

A LOOK AT THE WSU baseball roster would suggest that Pullman and Olympia are sister cities. Four members of the NCAA Tourney-bound Cougs hail from the state capital. That's twice as much representation as any other city. A CASUAL OBSERVER would notice nothing extraordinary about the 2010 Washington State baseball season. A conference record of 11-10. A 28-18 record overall. Middle of the pack in Pac-10 batting, pitching and fielding statistics. Few players among the conference leaders in individual statistics. Ah, but numbers alone tell us nothing about heart.

PULLMAN -- It has been said that it is better to be lucky than good. If so, it is even better to be lucky AND good. Case in point: The Washington State baseball team. The Cougars came from behind to win for the 16th time Sunday, and a lethal mix of skill and luck ultimately led to victory for the umpteenth time.
