18 who led WSU renaissance bid adieu Saturday

WIN OR LOSE on Saturday in the New Mexico Bowl, one thing is certain: the game will mark the end of the line for 18 Cougar seniors who arrived in Pullman with a promise to help rebuild and will leave having done exactly what they intended.

APPLE CUP NOTEBOOK: Big Joe likes the cold

PULLMAN -- On the defensive side of the ball during Monday night's practice, the front seven of the Cougs were hootin' and hollerin' and making plays. That kind of high-spirited action usually leads to WSU defensive line coach Joe Salave'a doing something outlandish. It was 19 degrees at the time, but Big Joe wasn't going to let a little thing like the freezing cold stop him.

WSU punting game has Russell speechless

PULLMAN — The WSU punting game this season has had CougFans reaching for the Maalox. Senior Mike Bowlin's production has been a mystery wrapped in a maze, and the bottom may have come Saturday. It's left special teams coach Eric Russell scratching his head for answers. Russell spoke with CF.C about Bowlin's struggles, while OL coach Clay McGuire broke down the play of a hoss who keeps impressing.

Examining Coug special teams with Russell

PULLMAN—Talk about flipping a switch. The Cougs started Tuesday's session looking a little sloppy on offense, but that was followed by a nearly-perfect team session. But first, a conversation with Eric Russell on punter Mike Bowlin's improvement plus his special teams standouts.

Halliday looks healthy, errant; Coug D sharp

PULLMAN — For starting quarterback Connor Halliday, it was business as usual with a full day under center on Tuesday. But that didn't mean it was necessarily a good day for the junior out of Spokane. Meanwhile, the Cougar defense, particularly the front seven, made life difficult for the offensive scout team -- breaking up passes, tipping balls, and pounding their way into the backfield.

Monday Morning Quarterbacking with Alex Brink

STANFORD WAS CLEARLY the better team in all three phases: offense, defense and special teams. The Cougars needed to play mistake free to compete and it didn't happen. There were still good things about their performance but overall, WSU was outclassed. And although a loss was not altogether unexpected, after a solid start to the season I was anticipating a more competitive effort from the Cougs.

Everything points to WSU starting Halliday

WASHINGTON STATE COACH Mike Leach does not discuss injuries, but he strongly indicated which quarterback would start at 1 p.m. Saturday at California. Leach also shared his thoughts on the Golden Bears and reflected on Saturday's 55-17 loss against No. 5 Stanford at CenturyLink Field during his Monday afternoon teleconference.

THUD! Cougs dismantled in Seattle shakedown

SEATTLE – Washington State's annual game at CenturyLink Field seems to get uglier each year and this one might have been the worst. The Cougars not only lost 55-17 against Stanford, but junior quarterback Connor Halliday exited with an injury in the second half. And the defense looked nothing like the unit that shut down then-No. 25 USC or shut out Idaho.
