ONE OF THE Cougs' backup running backs will need a year at a junior college to get his academic house in order and already is enrolled at his new school, he tells Cougfan.com. On the plus side, he looks at this point to be the only academic casualty at Washington State as the start of fall camp looms less than a month away.

THE UNOFFICIAL MOTTO for Washington State's football program this offseason is competition. Paul Wulff, who enters his fourth season as head coach, said Friday afternoon that multiple positions are wide open as the Cougars begin spring practice next week.

They heard, among other things, Wulff weigh in on recruiting, the running backs competition, special teams, defense, tackling, getting the ball to on offense to playmakers in a variety of ways, the health of the Cougs as spring ball draws near and a whole lot more.

PULLMAN -- A positive for the offense on Wednesday was the play of RB Arthur Burns. Burns, who recently converted to RB from LB, is still learning the offense and getting back the running back "feel." But he looked like a man on a mission Wednesday, bullying his way through the line and fighting for extra yards. And he earned his Wednesday time with the 1s, too.
