PULLMAN – It's a small group of graduating seniors for Washington State in 2013 and the question looms: Are there NFL-caliber prospects among them? If WSU's NFL Pro Day proved anything Thursday, it's that some Cougs will, at the least, be wild cards come draft day next month. Indeed, from this chair, the event was a raging success.

WASHINGTON STATE linebacker Alex Hoffman-Ellis went undrafted Saturday on the third and final day of the NFL draft and now awaits what figures to be an array of calls from teams looking to sign him as a free agent. He joins a group of fellow Cougs, none considered as draftable as Hoffman-Ellis, who now look to sign on as free agents.

ALEX-HOFFMAN ELLIS, a wild-eyed warrior on the football field, often shocks fans who meet him for the first time away from the field and discover that he's usually rather laidback when the helmet and shoulder pads come off. Hoffman-Ellis, the Cougars' top prospect for this week's NFL draft, projected his usual calm and cool manner on Monday when he discussed his draft outlook.

SEPARATED SHOULDER. Torn anterior-cruciate ligament. Those are typical quarterback injuries. Coach Paul Wulff said redshirt freshman Connor Halliday's season-ending lacerated liver suffered during Saturday's 30-27 overtime loss against Utah is more along the lines of a car-accident injury, according to the internist at Pullman Regional Hospital. Meanwhile, WR Isiah Barton's season is over.

ON A COLD NIGHT on the Palouse, led by a novice quarterback, on a team that has been up and down more times than an elevator, Cougar faithful found something in the snow: Hope. After dropping their last five games, Washington State not only prevailed against Arizona State, but also won by 10 points.
