Guard Vincent Grier of Minnesota has failed to land an invitation to the Orlando pre-draft camp that starts Tuesday. He was hoping to be one of 64 players trying to impress the NBA and European scouts in attendance. Grier had played in the Portsmouth Invitational in April, where he led his team, Holiday Inn Portsmouth, to the championship.

Vincent Grier of Minnesota scored 11 points as he helped Holiday Inn Portsmouth withstand a valiant rally to defeat Norfolk Sports Club 83-79 at the Portsmouth Invitational in front of many of the NBA's general managers and scouts. Holiday Inn Portsmouth led 51-38 and had a 16-point lead in the second half, before Norfolk Sports Club cut the lead to 80-79 in the closing minute. Grier also played in front of Minnesota assistant coach Jim Molinari.

The Golden Gophers are coming off a win at Penn State on Wednesday and two weeks ago defeated then #13 Indiana 61-42 in Minneapolis. The Gophers can be a dangerous team at times, led by senior guard Vincent Grier who averages a team-high 15 points per game. Senior guard Maurice Hargrow chips in 13 points per game for a Gopher offense that averages just 67 points per game.

Fifty of the country's top collegiate men's basketball players were named as pre-season candidates for the Naismith Trophy. The Naismith Trophy is the most prestigious national award presented annually to the men's and women's players of the year. The Top 50 list was compiled by the Atlanta Tipoff Club's Board of Selectors, comprised of leading basketball journalists, coaches and administrators from around the country. The board based its pre-season criteria on last year's player performances.

Word is that Minnesota senior forward Vincent Grier could be sidelined for two months with a broken left (shooting hand) wrist injury suffered in the Gophers' season opener versus North Dakota State. Grier was named a Blue Ribbon preseason fourth-team All-American and a first-team Big Ten preseason selection. Grier averaged 17.9 points and 5.3 rebounds per game this season as he led the Gophers to a 10-6 mark in the conference and 20-9 overall.
