Cougar Baseball Notebook: Now or never?

WITH 12 GAMES to go, the Cougs are 20-22 overall and 5-13 in the Pac-10 (tied for eighth). Thanks to a rugged schedule, the Cougars are 46th in RPI (seventh in the Pac-10). Eight Pac-10 teams, including Washington State, advanced to the 64-team NCAA tourney last year. But the Cougars might need to win at least two of three games against Arizona (30-16, 9-9) just to keep their tourney dreams alive.

BASEBALL: DQ Classic up next for 4-1 Cougars

NOW THAT Donnie Marbut has done what he could to fix what ailed the WSU basketball team, the Cougs baseball coach will turn his focus back to the diamond this weekend at the Dairy Queen Classic in Tucson, Ariz. Marbut, whose motivational skills no doubt have played a role in numerous late-inning rallies in recent years, spoke to the struggling hoops team at coach Ken Bone's request last Friday.

Notebook: Ponciano; track, golf, tix giveaway

WASHINGTON STATE'S BASEBALL opener is eight months away, but the Cougars have already recorded a key victory. Coach Donnie Marbut said catcher Jay Ponciano is back on scholarship and will return to WSU for his junior season. Meanwhile, there's track and golf news, and football and basketball posters and prizes will be given away at Hoopfest -- including football season tickets on the 50-yard line.
