In their second season since relocating from Tucson, the Chihuahuas surged in the second half push to make the playoffs before losing to the Astros’ loaded Fresno Grizzlies affiliate in the first round. A trio of thirty-something hurlers started 82 games for El Paso, which had a 4.57 team ERA good for second-best among the six desert clubs that give the PCL its offense-friendly reputation.

One of the main reasons why the Padres could be a sleeper club this season is because of their pitching depth particularly at the AAA level for their new affiliate in El Paso. Both Burch Smith and Robbie Erlin would be in major league rotations elsewhere and combined with five other Top 20 pitchers there will be a wealth of talent on the mound in the Sun City.
