The AA and AAA teams were in action in Peoria today against, as is the case of many of the games on the minor league backfields of Peoria, the Seattle Mariners - the Padres inter-league competition and rivals for the coveted "Veder Cup."

Synopsis: This is a classic Triple-A team with some prospects, others that are blocked and some guys trying to work their way back. The thin desert air and near cement infield at Kino Stadium in the summer months make this very much a hitter's paradise but not as much as some of the other stadiums in the PCL South.

Padres vs. Royals - AA/AAA games LHP Clayton Richard and RHP Luke Gregerson both got innings at the beginning of the two games today. Gregerson looked a little better than Richards but its foolish to see much into performances of established major league pitchers on the back fields of a minor league complex.

Summary: Despite having the best position prospect in the Padres' system, the Tucson Padres struggled for the second straight year, posting a 56-88 record. They finished second-from-the-bottom in the 16 team Pacific Coast League, ultimately one of the reasons that manager Terry Kennedy and pitching coach Steve Weber won't be back next season.

With many of the big name prospects on the disabled list several of the more unheralded pitchers have stepped up. Keep an eye on Burch Smith of Lake Elsinore and Matt Wisler of Fort Wayne both of whom should make top prospect lists in 2013.
