CORVALLIS -- Oregon State’s football team had its first Saturday practice - third overall this spring- in Reser Stadium. Fans gathered to watch Gary Anderson lead the players through drills and give performance feedback. The Beavs had a strong practice and seemed to have a contagious energy about them on a day where pads were added to the mix for the first time in spring drills.

IF OREGON STATE is to upset Oregon in the Civil War on Saturday (ABC, 5 p.m.) one thing that would surely help: WR Rahmel Dockery has more than a one-and-done. Dockery is averaging a ridiculous 32.4 yards per catch this season with two 49-yard receptions and a 46-yarder to his credit. But despite playing in 10 games, he has only five catches on the year.

EVERYTHING OSU HAS drawn criticism for this season was on display in the first half against Wazzu. Take a 10-lead and then take your foot off the gas? Check. Poor clock management? Check. Go away from the run? You bet. OSU had only 11 yards rushing in the first half. They trail 21-16 at the break. And they burned through precious seconds at the end of the half and settled for a field goal.

OH, TO BE Rahmel Dockery when the Beavers host the Cougars (Pac-12 Networks, 1 p.m.) Or Chris Brown, Malcolm Marable, Steven Nelson or Terron Ward. Maybe Ryan Murphy, too. These are the likely P/KO return men on special teams on Saturday. It's not as if WSU has been poor in punt and kickoff coverage. "Poor" would be a step up. No, the Cougs on special teams in 2014 have been legendarily awful.

IT GETS TOUGHER looking ahead for the Beavs with the defenses they’ll face. Starting with Utah, Oregon State will play two of three against teams ranked in the top 60 in total D. But Mike Riley has a handle on what the Beavers specifically need to do to in order to combat and have success against those units. But the question remains, can Oregon State execute those things out on the field?
