The scoop on QB race '13: Apodaca v Halliday

PULLMAN -- The path has not only opened, but cleared out in an almost eerie way. In the span of one week, David Gilbertson and Jeff Tuel bowed out, respectively electing to forego and stop fighting for fifth seasons. And Cody Clements, per multiple sources, is transferring. That suddenly puts Austin Apodaca front and center against Connor Halliday for the right to quarterback the Cougs in 2013.

DAY 16: Leach cracks whip; special teams woes

PULLMAN–The Cougs came out Sunday lacking vigor, hustle and effort. Fighting sweltering heat, the Wazzu offense sputtered and failed to establish any sort of tempo. And Mike Leach wasn't pleased. He proceeded to make it very clear to the players that if the Cougs are going to go anywhere this year, it will be predicated on effort and hustle. Plus, a ST report and a corner was sporting a new cast.

WSU DAY 15: NT returns, special teams focus

PULLMAN - The Cougs got out of the sun Friday, practicing at 8 p.m. for the first time this fall -- and one of Wazzu's nose tackles returned to the field. Meanwhile, at least five true freshmen appear to be making serious runs at early playing time. Friday was a no-pads, helmets-only practice, and special teams were the focus. Oh, and junior offensive guard Niu Sale is the new punt returner.

Up close with 7-on-7s on the Palouse

PULLMAN -- Here's the Reader's Digest version of Tuesday evening's 7-on-7 session between Washington State and Idaho: Dominique Williams made a great endzone catch of a Connor Halliday pass on a fade route; Tana Pritchard nabbed an INT in the redzone and returned it 92 yards; Darryl Monroe talked big trash while displaying excellent cover skills; and Damante Horton was lock down on press coverage.

SORENSEN: Nosing around the Cougar D

THE IMPORTANCE of the man in the middle can't be overemphasized, says Mike Breske. In a 3-4 defense, the nose guard must – MUST – be "a road grader," the Washington State defensive coordinator told me the other day in a post-spring review of the Cougar D.

SPRING BALL DAY 6: Halliday returns

PULLMAN — It was an efficient day of drills for the Cougars out on the Palouse Tuesday, with the defense dominating the final period of live action. Quarterback Connor Halliday returned to practice as a light participant and made some quality throws. Marquess Wilson absorbed two big hits, but held onto the ball both times. Special teams continued to be a focus -- with new drills being introduced.
