PULLMAN -- Clay McGuire probably knows as much about Mike Leach as anybody. The new WSU offensive line coach was a player or coach on nine of Leach's 10 bowl teams at Texas Tech. He spent the last two years coaching running backs at East Carolina, and says he's excited to be reunited with his mentor. While they disagree strongly on cowboy boot styles, they're simpatico otherwise.

THE HEADLINE-GRABBING part of the 2010 recruiting cycle is done, but if you look at some of the fine print from recent days you'll see that there's an ongoing subplot to the talent wars. Namely, that Washington State is as aggressive in landing preferred walk-ons as any school in the nation.

HE'S AMONG THE early list of top prep offensive linemen on Scout.com who will come out of the Evergreen State in the 2011 class. He holds a Washington State offer already, and he'll be out on the Palouse later this month for the Cougars' Junior Day.

HE ALREADY FELT PRETTY good about Washington State headed into this past weekend. The Cougs don't have a scholie open for the 6-4, 230-pounder right now but he liked the idea of being a preferred walk-on at Wazzu. The official trip to the Palouse clinched it, and he'll officially join the Cougars later this summer.
