Rockies trade for Astros Wilton Lopez

On day two of the Winter Meetings the Colorado Rockies made a trade with the Houston Astros to acquire right-handed reliever Wilton Lopez. The Rockies sent starter Alex White and minor leaguer Alex Gillingham to Houston and will also receive a player to be named later or cash considerations.

The Rockies started Wednesday with a front office shakeup, but not quite the one most fans were looking for. There was a game the Rockies were leading late until Matt Belisle surrendered a rare home run. There was also a play at the plate with questionable effort by Ramon Hernandez, who wouldn't go near the runner to make an easy tag. Another day, another loss, and now more Rockies notes.

The Spring Training Cactus League season has yet to officially start for the Colorado Rockies, it begins Saturday with a split squad game against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Salt River Fields, but some of the problems the Rockies might have this year are starting to become apparent not only to observers but to people inside the organization.

A Fresh Start for Rockies Young Arms

It didn't take Bill James to figure that the Rockies needed better pitching last season. General Manager Dan O'Dowd said after the Jorge De La Rosa injury and before the trade deadline that he wanted to acquire pitchers with club control beyond the 2011 season. He did that when he added LHP Drew Pomeranz and RHP Alex White from the Indians in August as well as RHP Tyler Chatwood in the offseason.
