Position battles all around

THE VANDALS START THE PROCESS of transitioning into full pads. Few positions are "locked up" at this point, including what is shaping up to be a lively battle for starting quarterback. Returning starter CHAD CHALICH (11) is back under center, but redshirt freshman Matt Linehan and true freshman Jake Luton are getting heavy reps. SIGNING DAY: Vandals add 17 recruits

NATIONAL LETTER OF INTENT DAY was a day loaded with surprises for Vandal fans as the second year staff under head coach Paul Petrino hauled in athletes from coast to coast. Of the 17 recruits signed Wednesday - most poised to make an immediate impact this fall - nine will be joining the program from the junior college ranks, taking the class to 25 with the eight JC recruits signed in December.

Jermaine Johnson, wide receiver from Ellender Memorial High School in Houma, La., reports several scholarship offers. He had a productive junior campaign with 43 receptions for 905 yards and nine touchdowns. The 6-foot-3, 170-pound prospect is anticipating a camp later in July.
