WASHINGTON STATE'S BASEBALL team is loaded with experienced players, but a pair of youngsters have shown the way for the Cougars in the early going. True freshman Ian Hamilton pitched three innings of shutout relief to beat top-ranked Cal State Fullerton, and redshirt sophomore Nick Tanielu leads the Cougars with a .438 batting average (7-for-16).

BASEBALL: Four drafted Cougs staying at WSU

DONNIE MARBUT IS plenty excited about Washington State's baseball recruiting class, but the Cougars coach might be even more excited about WSU's re-recruiting class. Marbut said Tuesday that four of the five Cougars selected in the major league draft earlier this month – including incoming freshman pitcher Layne Bruner from Montesano – have assured him they will be wearing crimson next spring.

Cougs take series from No. 14 ASU

A SIX-RUN THIRD INNING wasn't enough to guarantee the win on Sunday – good thing the Cougs (11-7) had more hits up their sleeves against No. 14 Arizona State. In a drama-filled game, ASU sent the tying run to the plate in the ninth before J.D. Leckenby induced a double-play to finish it off and cap both an 11-8 win and series win for the Cougs.

EVERY YEAR AT this time, Washington State baseball coach Donnie Marbut goes to bed with a knot in his stomach. Most of the time, his worst fears do not materialize. Every now and then, however, one of the Cougars' incoming recruits goes AWOL just prior to the signing deadline for June draftees and turns pro.
