AN EXPERIENCED WSU baseball team opens the season with a three-game series at top-ranked Cal State Fullerton starting Friday. Coach Donnie Marbut will field a squad that looks to be long on defense and pitching. Right-handed juniors Scott Simon and Tanner Chleborad will lead the rotation. But one senior expected to play a big role, either in the rotation or out of the pen, is lost for the season.

BASEBALL: Four drafted Cougs staying at WSU

DONNIE MARBUT IS plenty excited about Washington State's baseball recruiting class, but the Cougars coach might be even more excited about WSU's re-recruiting class. Marbut said Tuesday that four of the five Cougars selected in the major league draft earlier this month – including incoming freshman pitcher Layne Bruner from Montesano – have assured him they will be wearing crimson next spring.

"The Pac-10 is disgusting this year," WSU slugger Derek Jones said.
