PULLMAN -– The sun was shining in Pullman on Thursday, but that didn't stop close to 100 spectators from heading to WSU's indoor practice facility to watch NFL scouts put outgoing Cougar players through their paces. Defensive end Lance Broadus likely opened the most eyes with his speed and Charles Dillon, with dad watching, drew cheers for a spectacular catch.

WASHINGTON STATE HAS not in 2007 endured the wholesale early season injuries that have beset Cougar teams of recent years. But that doesn't mean there are no walking wounded among the crimson and gray. D-line coach Mike Walker said Wednesday one of the young cats could get his first collegiate start at one of the defensive spots up front.

WHAT DO YOU do for Week 2 if your defense gave up nearly 500 yards to Wisconsin in the season opener? Well, for one, if you're Bill Doba, you break out a crimson 4x4 up front. The starting d-line will have a new look against San Diego State and a new face or two will also be rotating in. A cornerback whose future looked very murky earlier in the week will travel, plus tons more news and notes.

PULLMAN -- A position tweak on D, expected following Bill Doba's Monday presser, was evident Tuesday on the practice field as the Cougs directed all their attention towards San Diego State and Saturday's tilt at Qwest Field. Some welcome returns to full contact were seen, including an expected key contributor who buckled the chinstrap and got some turns with the 1s, plus a long-missed starter.

FOR THE DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR and head man of the Cougs, Tuesday and Wednesday will be busy days this practice week. Bill Doba said Monday the staff will take a look at making some changes up front on the defensive line -- maybe. He also opined, in a wide ranging discussion, on the offensive line, running game, all things defense, special teams, injuries plus a whole lot more.
