The first cuts are in, and the only minor surprise is the release of cornerback Nashville Dyer. The free agent from Kent State is still eligible to be placed on the five-man practice squad after 4 p.m. on Sept. 1.

LATROBE –</b> They are the camp sleepers, the guys who come from nowhere to steal a town's attention in the preseason, only to slip back more often than not into the abyss of trivia questions.
Steelers Coach Bill Cowher was asked about his team's sleepers at Thursday's press conference. He didn't want to single anyone out, but eventually relented.
For the second consecutive year, nose tackle Casey Hampton struggled through the team's annual run test that kicks off training camp. Only this year, head coach Bill Cowher was a little more miffed about Hampton's failure than he was the year before.
Josh Miller admitted at minicamp he was eagerly awaiting the new season after missing the final month of the 2002-03 season with a shoulder injury. But another injury will knock the Steelers' punter out of the first two weeks of training camp.
