FOXBORO, Mass. -- The New England Patriots announced the release of ten players today as they worked to reduce the roster to meet a league limit of 53 by Saturday. New England also traded rookie running back Patrick Cobbs to the Pittsburgh Steelers for an undisclosed draft pick Cobbs, a preseason playmaker was unlikely to clear waivers should the team have made the attempt.

The Patriots acquired former Kansas City defensive back Eric Warfield to add veteran depth to their secondary for 2006. Part of the strategy last season was to build veteran depth around their rookies. This year Eric Warfield hopes to be part of that depth. By all accounts, he should be.
