The 2002 season was one of dissapointment, learning, excitment and glory. After a 4-0 preseason, the Jets began the regular campaign at 1-4, their only win coming on a Chad Morton kick off return for a touchdown in overtime on the first Sunday of the season at Buffalo. Pro Bowlers the previous year, running back Curtis Martin and defensive end Johnnie Abraham came into the season playing with severe injuries, and veteran quarterback Vinny Testeverde was ineffective at best.

It was one of those unbelievable blowouts. Sam Garnes said it reminded him of the 41-0 rout of Minnesota in the NFC Championship game that he took part in two years ago, as a member of the Giants. These circumstances were a little different because the Jets were favored to win. But nobody expected an outcome like this.
