Panthers cut Goings, Bridges and Hackett

Running back Nick Goings, receiver D.J. Hackett and offensive lineman Jeremy Bridges were released Wednesday as the Carolina Panthers continue to prepare for the start of the 2009 free agency period that begins at 12:01 a.m. Friday morning.

'Knocked Out' of contention?

Running back Nick Goings almost saw the collision once on a sports highlight show, but turned away at the last second. After getting the start in last year's NFC Championship game, Goings lasted just five carries before suffering a concussion following a devastating hit by Seattle's Lofa Tatupu. It was one of those rare hits where as you watch it live, you couldn't help but say, "Ooooh!"

Goings gets chance to shine

Perhaps all of the injuries at running back last season can now be considered a blessing in disguise for the Carolina Panthers. Otherwise, Nick Goings may never have had a chance to shine -- and the Panthers wouldn't know what to expect from their third-string running back when they head into Sunday's NFC Championship Game against the Seattle Seahawks.

banged-up backfield

Could this be happening again? The Panthers' backfield is beginning to look like the M.A.S.H. unit it resembled a year ago, with their top three backs banged up and questionable for Sunday's game against the Detroit Lions.
