First cuts aren't the deepest

The 49ers began cutting down their training camp roster on Sunday, dropping eight names that will mostly go unnoticed on the NFL waiver wire. The biggest surprise not to make the team's 65-player limit was running back Rashaan Salaam, who couldn't make it past the first round of cuts even though he was the Niners' leading rusher in Saturday's preseason game against New Orleans and is the team's second-leading rusher so far during the exhibition season.

When Jeff Garcia drops back to pass these days at 49ers training camp, the three-time Pro Bowl quarterback likes what he sees. There's a fresh new target breaking free down the sideline. There's another streaking open underneath. In fact, there's a talented target wherever Garcia attempts to throw. And that has Garcia calling it the best talent he has had to play catch with since he joined the 49ers.

Observing the Redskins

5 Skins headed to Europe

The Washington Redskins allocated five players to NFL Europe. Skins WR Justin Skaggs, DE Mike Cecere, T Akil Smith, CB Bruce Branch, and RB Robert Gillespie will all report to the Tampa Bay area for NFL Europe training camp on February 24.
