As expected, the Rays did not make a selection in the 2011 Rule 5 Draft. Somewhat surprisingly though, they didn't lose any players in the Major League portion. INF Matt Sweeney and C Gerardo Olivares were lost in the minor league phase. Details inside.

In 2001, it was nearly impossible for the Phillies to turn down drafting a kid out of Trenton, New Jersey. At the time though, Matt Sweeney wasn't necessarily the best pitcher on his high school team. Now though, he's climbing the ranks in the Phillies minor league system.

Prior to the 2001 Draft, there were some scouts that considered Matt Sweeney the third best pitcher on his high school team. That means that either the Hamilton-East Steinert High School baseball team in Yardville, New Jersey either had a great staff or Sweeney was just an okay pitcher. As Sweeney progresses, more and more scouts believe that the small high school was a hot bed of pitching.
