Commodores lose a defensive end for 2003

HOOVER, Ala.-- Vanderbilt sophomore defensive end Antoine Morgan will be academically ineligible for the 2003 season and may not be allowed to return to school this fall, head coach Bobby Johnson confirmed Tuesday at SEC Media Days. "We're hopeful that he will be in school," said Johnson.

The Commodores opened their last week of Spring Practice with a two-hour session Tuesday that concluded with a 30-play scrimmage. The four-series scrimmage mirrored most of the team's full contact sessions this spring: just as one unit appeared to have the upper hand, their counterparts made plays to reverse the momentum.

Football: Wednesday practice report

One of the highlights this spring for Vanderbilt coaches has been watching sophomore quarterback Jay Cutler accept an increased leadership role for the youthful Commodores. During a 45-minute scrimmage Wednesday, he displayed his remarkable playing skills. Cutler, who started 11 of 12 games as a redshirt freshman in 2002, was superb Wednesday, leading the offense to touchdowns in two of the three drives he directed.

DE Antoine Morgan a steal, says HS coach
