The 49ers begin another full-squad minicamp at team headquarters on Saturday, but that doesn't mean everybody on the roster will be attending. Several starters have been excused for various reasons, several rookies can't attend because their college classes have yet to graduate, and some veterans - such as DT D'Marco Farr - won't be around because they are on the way out. "As far as we're concerned right now, he's not going to be part of this football team," coach Dennis Erickson said Wednesday.

The 49ers put almost as much emphasis on the "eighth round" as they do on the rest of the NFL Draft. The team spent most of this week looking at and talking with draft-eligible players who didn't get selected over the weekend, and the Niners ultimately landed several prospects who have a chance to legitimately challenge for roster berths this summer. The Niners signed 18 of these players and will get their first look at them and the team's 7 draft picks in a 3-day minicamp that begins Friday.

In a season rife with quizzical folly, now comes the next great question.
