The Mets have made it a focus to aspire to good team defense. After fielding a team lauded in the popular press for it's defensive prowess in 1999, the Mets have deteriorated to the point of being one of the league's worst defenses in 2002. The moves the team made before the 2003 season did not put a premium on good defensive play. After two straight nights of unbridled enthusiasm, the impressive play of the Mets' youth movement became ugly, much as the play of now former second basemen Roberto Alomar, who was traded to Chicago Tuesday. However, it wasnt only the fault of the young guns, as Tony Clark and Jay Bell each contributed with an error in the fourth inning, which proved disastrous for Met starter Jae Weong Seo as his team fell to the Expos 11-4 on Wednesday night inside Shea Stadium.
