Minnesota has twelve scholarship basketball players for the 2008-09 season. They had hoped to sign a player, but missed out on Krys Faber and Verdell Jones and elected to hold the scholarship for next year. The Gophers will lose Jamal Abu-Shamala and Jonathan Williams and will have three scholarships available for next year. They have already added Royce White, who committed last month.

The Big Ten Men's Basketball Foreign Tour team opened its 2006 tour with a 117-91 loss to the West Sydney Razorbacks Basketball Club in Australia on Saturday. Minnesota center Jonathan Williams had a team-best 13 rebounds in the loss.

The conference office announced the schedule for the 2006 Big Ten Men's Basketball Foreign Tour team today, as Michigan head coach Tommy Amaker will lead his squad against four teams in Australia from Aug. 8-18. Center John Williams is the Minnesota representative.

The Gophers appear to be heading into the 2005-06 season with just 11 scholarship players with the recent defections of Miles Webb and Kerry Wooldridge and walk-ons Jordan Nuness and Alex Popp. They are holding onto the two remaining scholarships with the hopes of landing some of the outstanding homestate juniors. The following is the 2005-06 depth chart. The Gophers are hoping to return to the NCAA Tournament as they welcome back guards Adam Boone and Maurice Hargrow.

Jonathan Williams, a six-foot-9 center from Fitchburg (MA) Notre Dame Academy, has been cleared and will play for Minnesota this upcoming season. Willams was playing a bit of a wating game with the NCAA, which prevented him from attending summer school. Williams attended St. Cloud (Minn.) Apollo and signed with St. Johns in the 2002 early signing period. However, he de-commited to the Red Storm and went the prep school route to work on his academics.
