Roster cuts Are In !

The first cuts are in, and the only minor surprise is the release of cornerback Nashville Dyer. The free agent from Kent State is still eligible to be placed on the five-man practice squad after 4 p.m. on Sept. 1.

Day 2 Camp Notes, The Dirt

A player practices well one day and tanks the next. And then a guy you counted out steps up and grabs a roster spot. Erik Totten was my man yesterday, but then a guy named Troy Polamalu flew in and stole all the thunder. Sometimes the order of things before camp even begins is the best guide to how the final roster will shake out.

Camp Notes: Day 1 ... The Dirt

The pads are finally back on and the players seem just as anxious as the fans to see some hitting. Loud mouth Bettis, laid back Spike, and the X-man have all returned for another round football during the dog days of summer. While I have some difficulty following three rings (sometimes four or five) of practice, here are some impressions of the first open practice of camp.

First Day of Camp Cowher

<b>LATROBE -</b> The Steelers held their first practice of the 2003 training camp here at St. Vincent College with a larger than normal crowd in attendance. <br><br> And the team gave that crowd plenty to cheer about as it turned in a pretty crisp performance.

Mighty Casey strikes out

For the second consecutive year, nose tackle Casey Hampton struggled through the team's annual run test that kicks off training camp. Only this year, head coach Bill Cowher was a little more miffed about Hampton's failure than he was the year before.
