The San Diego Padres placed left-handed pitcher Sterling Hitchcock on the 15-day disabled list with a left elbow strain and recalled right-handed pitcher Dennis Tankersley from Triple-A Portland. Valenzuela with big hit, Bonine and California

Sterling Hitchcock was back on the hill in Portland, allowing the only run the Beavers gave up and leaving early…again. Johnson rising, Pauley trends

Sterling Hitchcock hits a bump in the road. Ben Johnson is solid as a rock in Mobile. He has homered in three consecutive games. David Pauley is getting better and better, is a no-hitter next? The Wizards bullpen looked like it would hold a slim lead but ended up blowing it and taking another loss.

Prior versus Thompson a draw

Without Sean Thompson, Mark Prior may have actually been the only show to see against the Wizards and Prior said he was happy with his performance, but Thompson was outstanding. Terry Byrom commented on the game and how Wizard batters looked. Lake Elsinore, meanwhile, stayed hot in the batters box. Between Mobile and Fort Wayne, Padres prospects managed just five hits and one was by Mobile pitcher Brian Whitaker. Sterling Hitchcock's return was not encouraging.

Friar Offerings

There is bright news, however, on the horizon, although it could be clouded by varied reports. What it does to the makeup of the team could shape the rest of the season.
