Trimming the roster

Steelers director of football operations Kevin Colbert was quick to point out in the aftermath of this year's draft that practice squads were increasing from five to eight players this season. And, Colbert said, the Steelers were taking players in later rounds with that in mind.

Game preview: Staley grouchy about return

<b>LATROBE - </b> Duce Staley, new running back for the Steelers, put the cell phone down long enough to talk to reporters about Thursday night's game against the Philadelphia Eagles.<br><br> He should've kept talking on the phone.<br><br> "It's just another preseason game," said the 2002 Eagles Offensive MVP. "I'm looking to go in and get a little more conditioning, learn the offense more and get more playing time because after this game, we've only got one more and then it's live bullets."

<b>BILL COWHER</b> <br><br> OK, just a couple of roster updates. We released Shane Walton this morning and we're in the process of placing Kendall (Simmons) and Zamir Cobb on injured reserve. If it doesn't get done today it'll probably be done tomorrow. Zamir suffered a fractured ankle, had successful surgery yesterday, so he will be done obviously for the year.

Steelers Roster News and Notes

Mike Schneck may be losing his long-snapping chores to rookie Drew Caylor, a sixth-round pick from Stanford. Schneck has been the team's long snapper for five seasons and has held off all challenges. The Steelers gave him a $100,000 signing bonus on a new contract when he became a free agent in March. However, Caylor would come at the rookie minimum wage and he also can serve as a backup center while Schneck cannot play another position.
