The NFL office made the decision on Josh Shaw for the 49ers on Tuesday. Shaw, the second-year defensive tackle who was on the roster bubble, was suspended without pay for the team's first four regular-season games for violating the league's substance abuse policy. The Niners must address Shaw's roster status again at the end of September, but it now appears unlikely he will play again for the team.

Saturday's exhibition game against the New Orleans Saints represents the final chance for several prospects to make an impression on the 49ers before Tuesday's deadline to cut NFL rosters to 65 active players. The Niners will be taking a hard look at those roster hopefuls while also trying to get some of their established players some action to stay sharp and, in some cases, shake of the rust.

The 49ers returned to training camp practice late Monday afternoon to a flurry of disappointing news. Pro Bowl quarterback Jeff Garcia won't play in Thursday's exhibition home opener against the Oakland Raiders, nor will he practice with the team this week. And Garcia's not the only player that the Niners had hoped to get back who won't be participating in daily practice drills for a while.
