KODAK, Tenn. – The Mesa Solar Sox roster is dotted with Tennessee Smokies players as four pitchers from the team were selected by the Cubs to play in the Arizona Fall League on Monday. They will be joined by an outfielder and an infielder who both spent most of the season in Double-A ball.

Through the years, the Arizona Fall League has been a major stepping stone in helping to speed up many prospects' growth and their ascension to the big leagues. The Cubs hope the seven prospects they have chosen to participate in this year's Fall League will use their time in Arizona to follow in the footsteps of major league players that have at one time called home to the post-season venue.

Joe Simokaitis grew up in Missouri, so naturally he started out as a St. Louis Cardinals fan. He has a brother that began as a batboy for the Cardinals and now works in their front office. But the Cubs' farmhand and the rest of his family have switched allegiances and now root for Chicago.

The first full professional season proved to be an up-and-down year for Joe Simokaitis, the 10th-round Cubs draft pick from the University of Nebraska in 2005. The shortstop started off slowly out of the gate, but toward the end of the year, he picked up more at-bats and made the most of them even while dealing with a strained hamstring.
