Britt and Bates Named Captains

As their names were called out one by one, Wesley Britt and Todd Bates sprung to the front of the stretching line to thunderous applause of their teammates Wednesday afternoon. The two were named Alabama's permanent captains for the 2004 season, an honor considered the highest a player can receive since it is voted on by their fellow teammates.

Another Year For Bates?

In many ways, it was unfair that Alabama senior defensive end Todd Bates lost a year of eligibility in 2003. At a time when the Crimson Tide was without a head football coach, or even a coaching staff in the wake of the defection of Dennis Franchione to Texas A&M, Bates unknowingly made a mistake for which he paid dearly.

Bates Anxious To Return

In this Presidential election year, there will be many references to the razor-thin margin of victory President Bush scored over former Vice President Al Gore in 2000. One may forgive Todd Bates if he considers an even closer decision–one vote–to have been more critical to Bates' life. It was by a 3-2 vote that members of an NCAA committee ruled Bates ineligible for the 2003 football season.

Forced to sit out after inadvertently using a banned substance, it wasn't easy for the senior lineman to watch his teammates struggle. <br><br> "It was real difficult, but I made the time count," Bates said.
