Eagles shot down by the 'Dores 96-60

The game opened in an unpleasant manner. Georgia Southern came into Memorial Gym and in the first five minutes could not miss a shot. They started the game with a 9-1 run and held led 16-8 six minutes into the game before the alarm sounded and Vanderbilt turned up the defensive intensity.

Nashville, Tenn.- Matt Freije scored 19 points while guards Russell Lakey and Jason Holwerda had 5 assists each as Vanderbilt downed the Southeastern Louisiana Lions to open the 2002-03 basketball season in a game played at Memorial Gymnasium.

Men's Hoops: A view from 3F

Sitting up in 3F and watching Friday night's game, you got a feeling that last year's 3-point bombers had come back to play in Memorial, but the undertone was completely different. Vandy put up 23 3-point shots Saturday and hit 8, but the bigger key was 30+ points in the paint. Kevin Stallings has finally made his mark.
