While Minnesota rolled 84-53 in their season opener under new head coach Tubby Smith, things did not go as smoothly out west for two people who were formerly in the Gophers program. Rico Tucker was just one of nine from the field in his first game with Pepperdine in their 100-70 loss to Oregon and former Gophers head coach Dan Moson lost his debut with Long Beach State 74-34 to BYU.

Rico Tucker, a 6-foot sophomore guard who played the past two seasons at Minnesota, will transfer to Pepperdine, according to his father Terry Tucker. Tucker, who sat out the first four regular-season games because of academic problems, played in 27 games and started two for the Gophers this season.

Newcomers Vincent Grier and Dan Coleman combined for 44 points in their first game with the Gophers as Minnesota won their season opener 83-66 over Lipscomb. The Gophers shot 55 percent from the field and had 14 steals and 12 blocks in the win. Minnesota's 12 shot blocks tied for the second most all-time in a single game, and the most since the Gophers tallied 13 blocks Dec. 12, 2003 versus Oral Roberts.

Rico Tucker, a 6-foot-0 guard from San Diego (CA) University High, signed with Minnesota in the early signing period. Tucker was named CIF Player of the Year and first-team All-CIF as a senior as he averaged 27.7 points per game for the 25-7 Dons, who advanced to the CIF Southern California Regionals first round. He was named first-team all-state Division III. Tucker is an excellent athlete who was measured with the highest vertical of anyone at the NBA Players Camp.
