In a move that clears space for Alex Gordon to take over left field duties in Omaha, the Royals on Tuesday evening announced the club has traded outfielder Buck Coats to the Chicago White Sox for cash considerations.
Players and faces come and go from every team's farm system each year, often unnoticed and just as often unmissed. The Cubs are saying goodbye to plenty of familiar faces late in 2007.

CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs today announced that the club has sent outfielder Buck Coats to Cincinnati for a player to be named. In addition, left-handed pitcher Clay Rapada has been claimed off waivers by Detroit.

Buck Coats had an ugly first month to begin 2007, batting below the Mendoza Line until early May. Since then, the outfielder has batted .393 in 38 games, including .500 (20-for-40) in June, for Triple-A Iowa.
The Venezuelan Winter League was home to many players from the Cubs' farm system this offseason.

Buck Coats was one of 10 players from the Cubs' organization to participate in the Venezuelan Winter League this past fall, though his stay was a bit of a short-lived one. Coats appeared in just 31 games and batted .211 with three home runs and 18 RBIs in 95 at-bats.

The Cubs currently have no one set in stone to replace Juan Pierre in centerfield in 2007. The 29-year-old signed with the Dodgers via free agency last November and while the Cubs have yet to sign anyone with the intent to play center, the front office is quick to point out that there is no shortage of players both in the farm system and on the 40-man roster that could potentially fill the void.
