On The Sidelines

Talks between linebacker Kendrell Bell's agent, Todd France, and the Steelers over a contract extension have ended. Bell will go through his fourth and final season and then become an unrestricted free agent, unless the Steelers re-sign him after the season. The team follows a philosophy not to negotiate new deals once the regular season starts.

The first cuts are in, and the only minor surprise is the release of cornerback Nashville Dyer. The free agent from Kent State is still eligible to be placed on the five-man practice squad after 4 p.m. on Sept. 1.

Notebook: Bettis experimenting with brace

Tuesday Morning Blitz

Chris Hope has been a good soldier. But his is a battle all but lost. Lost in perceptions, lost in politics. Lost. Hope handled his demotion last week from first-team dime to second quite admirably. He continued to fly around and lay the wood, and carried that same approach over to Saturday's scrimmage against the Detroit Lions. But nobody who's anybody seems to care.
