Talks between linebacker Kendrell Bell's agent, Todd France, and the Steelers over a contract extension have ended. Bell will go through his fourth and final season and then become an unrestricted free agent, unless the Steelers re-sign him after the season. The team follows a philosophy not to negotiate new deals once the regular season starts.

<b> LATROBE –</b> Jerome Bettis has fewer yards rushing this preseason (24) than he did after two preseason games last year (26), but it has nothing to do with that bulky knee brace the Steelers' running back wore in Saturday's game. <br><br> Bettis said his knee is fine and that the brace is just for experimental purposes.

Chris Hope has been a good soldier. But his is a battle all but lost. Lost in perceptions, lost in politics. Lost. Hope handled his demotion last week from first-team dime to second quite admirably. He continued to fly around and lay the wood, and carried that same approach over to Saturday's scrimmage against the Detroit Lions. But nobody who's anybody seems to care.
