Padres sign Cruz, non-tender Knott

The San Diego Padres officially signed outfielder Jose Cruz Jr. to a one-year contract on Tuesday. The team also non-tendered first baseman/outfielder Jon Knott.

Hurry Up and Wait

"I think in terms of major moves, this caps it off," Diamondbacks GM Joe Garagiola Jr. told MLB.com after the trade that sent Casey Fossum to the Devil Rays for Jose Cruz Jr. "This definitely will be a different team this year and one we think will be vastly improved." So it sounds like the lineup is set, and we know that at least four of the five spots in the rotation are locked. Where does it leave the 'Baby Backs' of 2004?

The U Files # 47: Dollars and Sense

Not only have the New York Mets in recent years played some bad baseball, but they've done it as one of the few teams in MLB to sport a payroll over $100 million dollars. It would have behooved the Mets to have a guide on hand, which could advise on how much a given player is worth. It may be too late to help past Mets teams, but here we may be able to zone in on what current free agents are worth. Here I will do this for selected free agents using the concept of replacement level production.
