The Seattle Mariners on Monday afternoon fired their embattled general manager, Bill Bavasi. Bavasi took over a promising franchise at the end of the 2003 season, but made a plethora of poor baseball-related decisions that have crippled the organization. The Mariners' dismal showing over first few months and poor record proved to be the last straw, though.

Manager Mike Hargrove called a brief team meeting after Tuesday's 5-3 loss to Pittsburgh. It was the sixth consecutive loss for Seattle, matching the season worst. And all six came against lowly National League East teams -- the Cubs (two), the Astros (three) and the Pirates (one and counting).

The Atlanta Braves have been waiting for Horacio Ramirez to become a top pitcher, and this year has been the year. His victory Sunday was his sixth quality appearance in eight starts.
