Peoria, AZ: The San Diego Padres Double-A squad was pummeled 8-3 as normally stellar pitchers were getting hit hard. Only one hit produced runs. Staying behind from Tucson, Cesar Carrillo and John Garland threw bullpens on a day that saw very little outdoor activity outside of the game. The High-A saw some quality pitching on the road.

Padres sign Jon Garland

The San Diego Padres today announced they have agreed to terms on a one-year contract with a mutual option for 2011 with right-handed pitcher Jon Garland. Mike Ekstrom was designated for assignment to make room.

Dodgers Go Flat on Brink of Clinching

Someone who attended the G-20 Summit Conference in Pittsburgh and stopped by to watch a baseball game would have had difficulty determining which team had the best record in baseball and which one had lost 23 of their last 26 games. The Dodgers were unable to handle a constant parade of Pirate relief pitchers and dropped a deadly vanilla 3-1 decision.

L.A. Tops Pittsburgh; Leads by Four

Jon Garland won his second game, Andre Ethier slugged his 29th home run and Orlando Hudson broke out of his slump with three hits as the Dodgers topped Pittsburgh 6-2 and picked up a game on Colorado, who lost to San Francisco. The magic number, although no one is talking about it, dipped to 11.

Garland Lands in LA

The Arizona Diamondbacks have rid themselves of Jon Garland's ill-advised contract by dealing him to the Los Angeles Dodgers for a player-to-be-named-later. The veteran pitcher compiled a 5.35 ERA at Chase Field and figures to fare better in the friendlier confines of Dodger Stadium.

Brandon Webb is scheduled to undergo season-ending shoulder surgery today, raising the question of whether the Arizona Diamondbacks will be willing to exercise his $8.5 million option for 2010. Also: Miguel Montero is confirmed as the starting catcher for the remainder of 2009.

D-backs Finalize New Spring Training Site

The Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community Council has signed a Memorandum of Understanding to partner with the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Colorado Rockies to build a new spring facility on Community land in time for the 2011 season. Also, Josh Whitesell replaces Tony Clark on the D-backs' 25-man roster.
