Baseball: Dores win second over VMI, 5-2

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Junior right-hander Jensen Lewis gave up just one hit and struck out nine in seven innings of play, and led #18 Vanderbilt to a 5-2 victory over VMI today at Hawkins Field. The final game of the three-game series is tomorrow (Sunday) at 1 pm. Tickets are $1.

Baseball practice opens today

The Vanderbilt Commodore baseball team begins preseason practice Tuesday (Jan. 18) at 2:30 pm in preparation for the 2005 season. The Commodores return 20 letterwinners (five position starters), including preseason All-American junior second baseman Warner Jones, from last season's team that was two games away from its first ever College World Series appearance after sweeping the Charlottesville NCAA Regional.

Dores down Patriots 7-3, move to winners' bracket

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.-– Jeremy Sowers struck out 11 batters and allowed four hits over eight innings, and Cesar Nicolas knocked in three runs on two hits, including a solo home run, as Vanderbilt cruised past George Mason 7-3 Friday in a rain-delayed contest at Davenport Field. Friday's rained-out second game between Virginia and Princeton was rescheduled for 11 AM ET Saturday, pushing back Saturday's schedule; Vandy should now meet the Virginia-Princeton winner at 7 PM Saturday.

McGraner's RBI single puts Vandy into championship

HOOVER, Ala.-- With one swing, Vanderbilt's Matt McGraner became the unlikeliest of heroes. The Commodores' backup catcher, in his only plate appearance, lifted a base hit to right to score Tony Mansolino from second and lift Vandy to an astonishing, 6-5 victory over Florida in 12 innings Saturday in the SEC Tournament. The win, the eighth in a row for Tim Corbin's ball club, put the seventh-seeded Commodores (42-16) into the tournament championship game Sunday at 3 p.m. (Fox Sports Net).
