Freshman Jamal Abu Shamala Given Scholarship

Jamal Abu-Shamala, a 6-foot-5 freshman from Shakopee, has been awarded a scholarship at Minnesota. Abu-Shamala, who led the Sabers to the Class AAA state title and he was named first-team All-Metro by the Minneapolis Star Tribune, bypassed several Division I and II offers to walk-on. He scored 24 points and grabbed 13 rebounds in the 57-46 championship win over Richfield. The Gophers have 13 players under scholarship for the 2005-06 season. The University of Minnesota received oral notification from the NCAA today that men's basketball player Adam Boone has been awarded a sixth year of eligibility. The senior from Minneapolis, Minn., has sat out all season after undergoing surgery on October 7 to repair a torn biceps tendon in his right arm. He was the Gophers' only returning starter coming into this season before being injured during preseason practice.

Boone played in all 30 games last season, starting 27 after transferring from North Carolina.
