Ex-Gopher Phil Archer has strong season at WIU

Former Gopher Phil Archer finished second in tackles for Western Illinois, which finished their regular season 8-3 and ranked 11th in the country in the Division I-AA football Poll. Archer started 10 games as a sophomore for Minnesota and made 113 tackles on the season (average of 11.3 per game) to rank fifth in the Big Ten before losing his starting job last season. He transferred to Western Illinois and since the Leathernecks are a Division I-AA team, he was eligible without having to sit out.

Football: Coaches meet media, Maturi meets MLB

Big Ten football coaches gathered in Chicago for the annual Big Ten Kickoff Luncheon, while Athletic Director Joel Maturi went further east to meet with Major League Baseball officials in Washington, D.C., on Thursday. And one Gopher player left town for good.
