Gophers rally for 5-2 hockey win over Notre Dame

Sophomore forward Thomas Vanek scored two goals and added an assist to lead the Gopher hockey team to a 5-2 win over Notre Dame in the semifinal of the 2004 NCAA Midwest Regional in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The top-seeded Golden Gophers fell behind 2-0 to the #4 seed Fighting Irish before scoring five unanswered goals in the second and third period to advance to tomorrow's regional championship game. Minnesota will play Minnesota-Duluth for spot in the 2004 Frozen Four in Boston on April 8-10.

Hometown hero Kellen Briggs leads U to 2-1 win

Colorado Springs natve freshman goaltender Kellen Briggs stopped 23 of 24 shots to lead the Gophers to a 2-1 road win over Colorado College. Briggs, playing in his first collegiate game in his home state, made several big saves, including two on breakaways to push Minnesota's unbeaten streak to five games (3-0-2). Junior defenseman Keith Ballard was the offensive star, scoring the game-winning goal early in the third period. The Golden Gophers are now 8-1-2 in their last 11 games.
